Etnas sun - shadow seesaw

Etna's nearly eternal shadow rising up over the eastern skyline (the moon  eclipse principle). This photo is only possible when there is a really cloudless horizon!

20.00 pm: During my staying time at the summit the second eruption started with a lava tounge of the new Levantino. I think every paroxysm did started in the same way. The lavaflow was reaching the base of the cone ( 70m ). The speed of currency in the middle apprx. 2-3 m/s. Compared with the 12/13 eruption, when the flow reached the estimatet speed of 15 m/s at the strongest part of the eruption.

The foundation of the Levantino. The time during the foundation of Levantino was photographed from me at the 14.February and April 2000. This was the place were I discovered also the flows at the third of April 2000 and were I saw at the sixt of April together with Andreas Heidl a big lava foutain at the NNE slope of the SE- cone during a strong eruption.

Click to the 14th February 2000

The view back. The silhouette of the SE cone and the eastern slopes of the northern crater. 24:00h. Point were I took this Photo. The Observatory at the Pizzi Deneri.

The final on the 9th June 2001, 3:00am

Two photos above: Powerful coloured photos During this time the whole summit area was changing into a never seen before fantasy scenery. The end of the eruption was going till 6:00 am to dawn and let the colours getting weaker.

The morning of the 11th June 01

Preface

The SE is 30 years old. and has now the altitude of apprx. 300 m. The top of SE after the new activities is reaching now apprx. 3300 m over sealevel. (That's my own estimation!). That makes 10 m per year. O.k., and when I am 105 years old the SE- cone  has his 100 year jubilee. If everything wents in a schedule way, Mt. Etna should have the height of 4000 m in the year 2071. Hmmm, sounds logical......

5.30, The candle of hot gases and lava is rising up between the dense ash very powerful

4:00 am: loud barking dogs it the close environment at our campground did wake me up to say: "get out of your sleeping back and look for Etna, avanti! The activity was going on since apprx. 3.00 am (images are coming) and with the first light the dense ash column got visible.

Etna at 5:00. On the right you can discover the new vent Levantino. The typical bright apperance let suppose a very hot temperature of this in a broad lava fountain. The mighty black ash cloud was leaving in western direction and so the big flame got visible. This image remembers me to a Buddha on the top of Etna or even a friendly ghost who wants to say Hello to all who were awake at this time

Clicking on thumbnail the main view is going to the base and the static of the SE-cone. The photos presents over along time ( 30 min ) steady leaving gases at equal points of the cone and let me suppose that the SE is conquered with amass of veins which are 'under use' only by extrem pressure. This is may the reason that the SE- cone base is setting against strong explosions while the inner power of the volcano is forcing the material from 500 up to 1000m. That means that the SE-cone will build up himself in smaller breath - through layers in a static balance.

The up to eight / ten km high reaching steam and ash column. The eruptions from the 7th to the 11th let us hear nearly no eruption sounds at our place. The reason was maybe the wind which was turning away from our point, or the compact weather condition of ten days.
