Der zweite Flug sollte eine weiter Kuriosität bringen. Allerdings sorgte die Aktivität am Morgen für Verwunderung und Frust. Im morgendlichen Dämmerungslicht wollte ich den Versuch starten, die Blitze zu filmen. Nix da, die starke Aschewolke sackte vor meinen Augen förmlich zusammen, und der Vulkan stellte seine aschige Aktivität ein. Für 45 Minuten war nicht einmal die kleinste Dampfwolke zu sehen. Na, das kann ja ein toller Überflug werden. Immerhin hatten wir die Möglichkeit die Auswirkungen des Ausbruchs anzusehen. Aber es kam wieder einmal anders. Noch beim Hinflug wurden wir mit einer intensiv weißen Dampfsäule von einer Höhe von etwa 4 Km konfrontiert. Immerhin.

Bei der ersten Wende schossen plötzlich und vollkommen überraschend schwarze Aschesperre im Beisein von herausgesprengten Eisbrocken aus der Dampfwolke. Diese rotierenden Brocken zeigten im anschließenden Gegenlicht bizarre Dampfspiralen. Nun türmte sich in Sekunden ein Turm aus einem Asche-und Dampfgemisch bis zu einer geschätzten Höhe von 1,5 Kilometer vor unseren Augen auf. Bei einer Flugdistanz von etwa einer Meile (1,6km) durchaus überwältigend. Hatte der Vulkan wieder seinen Aktivitätsmodus geändert? Ja. Die weiteren Vorbeiflüge zeigten ununterbrochen weitere Ascheaktivitäten, die in Ihrer Schönheit nicht zu überbieten waren.

Elegant bohrten sich die Explosionspfeile blitzschnell durch das grelle Weiß. Im Verhältnis zu der riesigen Dimension erschienen die gesamten Vorgänge jedoch wie in Zeitlupe. Somit wurde auch der Name Eisvulkan von mir gegründet. Die Steigerung folgte. Ich sah Marco an, gebürtiger Italiener und Wohnhaft in Triest, und sagte zu ihm. "Weißt du, an was mich das ganze erinnert?" - "An einen riesen Berg Straciatella". Marco grinste...

Im Gespräch mit dem Piloten stellte sich heraus, dass an diesem 17.4.2010 zum ersten Mal seit Ausbruch des Eyjafjalla der Blick in den Krater überhaupt möglich war. Da vor uns nur ein Helicopter mit zwei Insassen aufstieg, gehören wir nun zu den ersten 10 Menschen dieser Erde, die den Blick in diesen Vulkan erleben durften.

Der Feuervulkan 

Noch fasziniert vom zweiten Flug erlaubte das nun besser werdende Wetter weitere Einblicke in das Vulkangeschehen. Tatsächlich hatte sich die Aktivität am morgen des 17.4 geändert. Diese war auch offiziell von den isländischen Vulkanologen bestätigt worden. Die Aktivität sollte sich aber bis zum Nachmittag des 19. Aprils wiederum ändern.  Aufgrund der nur noch 5-10%-igen Stärke der Aktivität (Langt für Island und zur Schließung des Kevlavik Flughafens immer noch) war nun der Krater frei zum Einblick. Vorherige Flugberichte schilderten von Lavaexplosionen, Druckwellen und Ascheaufstieg. Ja nix wie rauf! Lange war die Situation mit dem Wetter brenzlich, die bereits tiefstehende Sonne verhinderte jedoch eine weiter Quellwolkenbildung, und es wurde gegen 19:30 wieder klar.

Nun war der Einblick in den Schlund möglich. Seitlich schoben sich riesige Lavafetzen an den Aschewolken vorbei. Rotglühende kleinbusgroße Lavaklötze wurden spielend etwa 300m hinter dem Kraterand 'abgesetzt'. Druckwellen erschütterten den Helicopter. Widerholt konnte der scharfe Knall den Rotorenlärm übertönen. Gelegentlich wackelten auch die Scheiben. Ja, das hat wirklich so richtig Spaß gemacht!

Das von der Vulkanhitze geschmolzene Gletschereis suchte sich durch Eistunnels bis zu Durchmessern von bis zu 50m im liquiden Zustand (auch bekannt als Wasser ;-), den schnellsten Weg ins Tal. Im nach hinein brachen die Eisröhren ein, und hinterließen Eislöcher von beträchtlicher Größe.

Und so sieht das bei Nacht aus. Allerdings konnten nur sehr wenige gute Belichtungen wegen des eisigen Sturms gelingen. Macht nix.
